It’s a Catholic monument and shrine dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ overlooking the Portuguese capital and was inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. The giant statue was erected to express gratitude that the people of Portugal were spared the effects of World War II. Work began on it in 1949 and took 10 years to complete.
